Breaking Barriers: Improving Access to Care and Employment for Trans and Intersex Individuals

In Zaragoza, Spain, the ActiveAid project launched its first Transnational Project Meeting on January 15–16, 2025. Representatives from across Europe gathered to address one of the most pressing issues of our time: creating equitable conditions for transgender and intersex individuals to access healthcare and employment opportunities.
A Collaborative Vision for Equality
The ActiveAid project aims to foster social inclusion and promote human rights by addressing barriers faced by transgender and intersex individuals. The project adopts a multi-pronged approach involving research, training, and awareness campaigns.
The two-day kickoff meeting marked the beginning of a journey to create impactful change. Through presentations, workshops, and collaborative discussions, participants set the stage for the project’s work packages and deliverables.
Highlights from the Kickoff Meeting
- Project Management and Quality Assurance Led by SOMOS, the session outlined strategies for effective coordination, ethical standards, and risk management. Participants finalized the Project Management Plan, ensuring alignment and transparency across all project activities.
- Understanding the Challenges WISEFOUR introduced methodologies for conducting interviews and focus groups to explore the challenges faced by transgender and intersex individuals, healthcare professionals, and employers. Plans for country-specific reports and state-of-the-art analyses were set in motion.
- Developing the ACTIVEAID Training Programme LGL presented an overview of the training curriculum design, which will be informed by insights from focus groups. The program will provide tools to foster inclusivity in workplaces and healthcare settings.
- Communication and Dissemination SSF shared a comprehensive strategy for disseminating project outcomes. Key activities include social media campaigns, newsletters, and the production of narrative and success story videos.
- Timeline and Next Steps The team reviewed deadlines for upcoming deliverables, including the first focus group reports and materials. Plans were also made for the second Transnational Project Meeting in Greece.
Building Momentum
The meeting concluded with a renewed sense of purpose and collaboration. Partners left Zaragoza inspired to bring the project’s vision to life. Together, we aim to make a meaningful difference in the lives of transgender and intersex individuals across Europe.
