Many of us ask ourselves these questions, especially at the start of a new year. However, life can often get so busy, or we are so stuck in our routines that we brush them off and carry on in the new year as if they never crossed our mind.
NEW YEAR, NEW GOALS?
We face challenges at work and in our personal lives that we are constantly trying to navigate, and sometimes all at once. We are on autopilot, ‘solution mode’, which means that our goals and dreams are set on the back burner. We wait for a time that will be more convenient to attend to them.
The reality is that our goals and dreams are what make our life worth living and should be made our priority!
Many of us see the start of a new year as a time for renewal and the perfect time to set out the pursuit our goals, old and new. We set out on the noble quest of reevaluating where we are and how we can fit pursuing our goals into our busy lives and schedules.
We hold onto the promise of the opportunity that comes with the fresh start of a new calendar. Yet, we often find ourselves setting the same goals that we weren’t able to achieve the previous year!
Why do we have trouble keeping the promises that we make to ourselves?
The barrier to goal success is not always about the goal you have set for yourself, but rather the process we follow to try and attain our goals. Our goal striving efforts need to go beyond thinking about or writing down our goals each year and follow a sustainable process that will lead us to daily, weekly or monthly actions to achieve them.
STEPS TO SUCCESSFUL GOALS!
- Set achievable goals
A great start is to set simple, realistic goals that you can manage. This will help ease you into the goal setting and achieving process. When establishing your new year resolutions, they should be achievable, yet inspirational and approached as a marathon and not a race. Taking small, consistent steps will keep you on the right track. The key is to write down simple goals that inspire you to move in the right direction.
2. Be specific about your goals
The problem with new resolutions that you set is that they are often too abstract. Itwould be helpful to be more specific with your goals and what you are willing to do to achieve them. For example, if you want to start exercising more, you should be specific on how you are planning to build a routine for this goal. Think about what type of exercise you would enjoy doing, what type of equipment you will need, set a specific time schedule, including days and times for your workout. These small and specified steps will help you manage your goals and transform a vague idea into an action.
3. Divide your resolutions into a set of mini goals
Now that you have turned your resolutions into specific goals, it is time to divide them into smaller goals. Smaller goals are easier to achieve, as they won’t overwhelm you with the volume of information and effort. The added pro-tip is that you should involve elements of fun into your mini goals, to avoid boredom and motivate you not to give up! For example, if you are aiming to exercise more, create a workout playlist of all your favourite songs that will add an element of enjoyment to your new routine and keep you pushing through your workouts
4. Have a plan for when you fail to maintain your goals
Be prepared for the possibility of failing in one or more of your goals. It is only human not to be able to keep up with everything in your wish list and to-do-list. Have a plan when this happens, do not let one incident throw you off from the progress you have already made with your goals. Create a review by pinpointing and writing down the reasons why you failed to maintain your goal, acknowledge them, so that next time you will be prepared and avoid repeating the same mistakes.
These steps will lead you towards your personal growth. Now is the opportunity to motivate yourself to make all of your dreams come true. Remember, writing your goals onto paper is the first step for you to bring them to life!
