EUROPEAN HERITAGE DAYS 2022: TOWARDS A MORE SUSTAINABLE HERITAGE
“Sustainable Heritage – Preserving the past for future generations” is the theme for the 2022 #EuropeanHeritageDays. The shared European theme, in the context of UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), attempts to tackle the impact of climate change and its environmental implications regarding the protection of heritage, both tangible and intangible.
More specifically, this year’s theme encourages the adoption of good practices and use of sustainable resources and materials that eliminate the environmental footprint, rendering thus the historical sites and monuments accessible to present and future generations. The use of new technologies and digital tools are among those sustainable good practices that can contribute to the preservation of Europe’s diverse cultural heritage.
New Digital Era

The European dimension of cultural heritage
European Heritage Days is a joint initiative of the European Commission and the Council of Europe, running since 1999. They are the most widely celebrated participatory cultural events shared by people living in Europe. They help bring people together and highlight the European dimension of cultural heritage in the countries that signed the European Cultural Convention. Up to 70,000 events are organised each year to help raise awareness of the value of this common heritage and the need to preserve it for present and future generations.
